VA12504 1/43 Ford Fiesta Mk1 XR2, Caspian Blue

Ford’s Dunton-based ‘Special Vehicle Engineering’ worked hard to make the XR2 handle the extra power provided by its Cortina 1600GT engine and Weber carburettor.

The front ride height was lowered an inch by altering the MacPherson strut’s spring-pan whilst the tie bar to the front frame was lowered to reduce rearwards pitch on acceleration and to counteract the vicious torque steer that often afflicted powerful front-wheel-drive cars before electronic intervention became the norm.

Although stiffer damping was used, the XR2 retained the 1300S’s springs and rear anti-roll bar.

The Mk1 XR2 was released when the Fiesta was five years old, meaning it was only in production for just over two years.
