Available in only three colours, Diamond White, Black and Moonstone Blue, and with only two options (electric windows or central locking) the Sierra Cosworth grew out of Ford's desire to enter Group A Touring Car racing, which demanded a minimum 5,000 vehicles be produced. It was initially thought they would be difficult to sell but in fact Ford underestimated demand and 6,021 examples of the original model were produced whilst all four incarnations of the Sierra Cosworth sold 26,771 cars in total. Its chassis and drive-train were then used to create the Escort Cosworth in 1992, of which 7,000 examples were sold.
