VA12202 1/43 Ford Merkur XR4Ti - 1985 British Touring Car Champion - Andy Rouse

In 1983 Ford's long term strategy for Touring Cars was to develop what would become the Sierra Cosworth.

However, with their outdated Capris being humiliated regularly, the North American market's Merkur XR4Ti, with its 2.3-litre 4-cylinder S.O.H.C 'Lima' engine, offered a quick solution and had greater tuning potential than the European V6 engined Sierra XR4i.

Engineer and driver Andy Rouse was engaged to develop the car, which was not homologated until 1st April 1985.

Andy duly drove the Merkur to its maiden victory just days later at Oulton Park in the Championship’s 2nd round. He went on to dominate, winning 9 of the remaining 11 races.

Did you know?

Andy Rouse won the overall British Saloon Car title four times, his first victory coming in 1975 aboard a Triumph Dolomite Sprint. However, he is the only man to win the Championship three years in succession in three different cars.

In 1983 he used an Alfa Romeo GTV6 and then switched to a Rover SD1 Vitesse for 1984 before winning his last overall crown in 1985 driving the Ford Merkur XR4Ti modelled here.

The Corgi range of Vanguards die-cast models represents vehicles that shaped the lives of people living in Britain from the post-war period to the present day.

Each 1:43 scale model is presented in a branded box and comes with a limited edition certificate.
